Antique French Napoleon III Brass Fender Circa 1880

Height: 8 3/4 inches   Width: 39 inches   Depth: 6 1/4 inches

Fire fenders encircled the hearth to prevent ash and logs from rolling out into the room.  They could be very simple or quite elaborate in design.  Fenders were often made of brass or iron due to durability and aesthetic appeal.

The reign of Napoleon III (1852-1870) is often referred to as the Second Empire style, characterized by an eclectic mixture of Neoclassic and contemporary elements. The style was ornate, decorative, opulent and considered very luxurious. “More is more” would be a phrase used to encapsulate Napoleon III designs.
