Lead crystal contains lead oxide, giving the glass a highly refractive level and a bright, sparkly appearance.  Use of lead crystal in antique chandeliers enhanced and multiplied the reach of soft candlelight. A greyish tint (the high lead content) can often be seen in lead crystal glass.
