Jacobean refers to a style of English furniture made popular during the reign of King James I (1603-1625) and his son Charles I (1625-1649).  It is characterized by use of rich, dark woods, heavily carved details and geometric shapes in the carvings.  Gothic and Renaissance styles were of great influence in Jacobean furniture.
