Traditional lithography was typically used for single color (black and white) prints.  Chromolithography involves creating a separate printing surface (a different plate) for each color in the image.  The colors are printed sequentially to build up the full spectrum of colors in the print.  This technique allows for fine color blending and a high degree of detail.
