Antique 19th Century French Provincial Salt Box

Height: 17 inches   Width: 7 1/2 inches   Depth: 5 inches

Antique salt boxes stored, dried and protected coarse salt from moisture. In the 19th century, salt was sold in lumps with coarse grain. The salt boxes were usually near the hearth or stove for ease of use when preparing foods.  The heat  generated from the hearth or stove helped the salt to be reduced to a powdery state.
