19th century Venetian glass was produced on the island of Murano in Venice.  Its intrciate designs, often featuring fanciful shapes, made good use of ancient techniques such as filigrana (canes of twisted glass) and millefiori ( mosaic-like patterns from sliced rods of glass). Gilding, enameling and engraving are also features of beautiful Venetian glass pieces.
