Antique Charles X Birdseye Maple Console Table, Circa 1900

Height: 35 inches   Width: 48 inches   Depth: 17 1/2 inches

Charles X (1824-1830) was the younger brother of Louis XVI and Louis VII.  The furniture of the court style was more curvy and less massive than the Empire period. An outstanding feature is the use of lighter woods in blond tones, such as bird's eye maple.

Bird's eye maple results from a naturally occurring oddity in maple wood grain, particularly in sugar maples, creating eye-shaped swirling markings that disrupt the grain.  It was widely used in veneers.
