Antique Early 19th Century French Iron and Tole Chandelier

Height: 43 inches  Diameter: 32 inches

Wrought iron has been a design element in furnishings for centuries, including in the creation of chandeliers and light fixtures.  Unlike cast iron, wrought iron is heated and then shaped by skilled blacksmiths into the desired form.  It is a very strong material, lasts forever, and can easily marry function and ornate design.

Tole is painted, enameled or lacquered tinplate. Tinplate is a thin sheet of steel coated with tin to keep the steel from rusting.  The tin coating also provides a metallic luster.  Tole pieces often bear decorative designs.
