Antique English Briarwood and Ebonized Cabinet, Circa 1860

Briarwood is the burl of the white heath tree which grows in the Mediterranean region.  The burl grows underground, between the root and trunk of the tree.  It is a strong and a very beautiful wood.

 

When wood has been ebonized, it has been stained black to imitate ebony.
