Antique English Burl Walnut Ormolu Mount Table, Circa 1850

Height: 29 inches   Width: 42 inches   Depth: 60 inches

Center tables were typically placed in the middle of a parlor or foyer. They were meant to draw attention to the center of the room.  Center tables had various uses: for social events, for collections and displays, or even as desks for writing and reading.  They are very often beautifully decorated and inlaid.

Burl walnut (American English) or Burr walnut (British English) is wood harvested from the base of walnut trees, where a large ball often occurs. The burl itself is actually an abnormal growth or deformity on the tree, often caused by some sort of stress such as a virus or bug infestation. When cut, the burl has a distinct appearance that can be finished to create an attractive piece of furniture or other structure. Walnut burl wood exhibits a rich dark color with deep, complex grain patterns, and is often used in crafting high-end furniture, veneers, and decorative items.

Bronze d'oré, also known as ormolu or gilt bronze, was a decorative finish used on luxury furnishings in the 18th and 19th centuries. An application of finely ground high carat gold and mercury amalgam was placed on objects of bronze. When subjected to extremely high heat, the mercury evaporated, leaving behind a lustrous coating of gold.

Gilt-bronze mounts were used to protect furniture from damage and to emphasize form, and to mount beautiful objects such as candelabra, clocks, lamps, pedestals and porcelain vases.
