A tantalus is a decorative box designed to hold one or more crystal or cut glass decanters, and features a lock and key to restrict access. The term tantalus is derived from the mythological Greek character named Tantalos, who offended the gods and was eternally punished by being subjected to food and drink just out of his reach. Geroge Betjemann, a cabinet maker, is credited with patenting the tantalus in the last 19th century. He designed it as a piece to showcase fine decanters while restricting access to their contents. Tantalus may also feature compartments for storing playing cards or gaming accessories.
