A Davenport desk is a small chest of drawers with a desk on top.  Named for Captain Davenport, a British military official who commissioned the first of the type. The desk drawers open on one side and the other side is for show. They often had hidden compartments as well. These desks were popular during the late Georgian and Victorian eras.
