Antique English Mahogany & Satinwood Demi-lune Console Games Table, Circa 1890

Height: 29 3/4 inches   Width: 35 3/4 inches   Depth: 17 3/4 inches

A demi-lune (“half moon”) table is crescent-shaped with a graceful front and a straight back designed to be set against a wall.  They may have three to four legs.  Demi-lune tables can substitute for consoles or credenzas, especially in long, narrow spaces.  They have been popular for centuries and come in many sizes, shapes and designs.

Games and card tables became popular  in the 18th and 19th centuries  as games and card playing became pastimes of the European upper class.   The tables were made of quality fine wood, often decorated with inlay, and might also feature a dual-purpose top, with one side designed for gaming and the other for writing or other uses.  Other games and card table features include folding tops, inlaid game boards, or specialized storage compartments.
