Antique English Queen Anne Black Walnut Bench, Circa 1880
Height: 22 inches Width: 34 inches Depth: 15 3/4 inches
The Queen Anne style emerged in early 18th century England, and is characterized by graceful curves, flowing lines and simple decorations. The style was focused on comfort and elegance. Cabriole legs and padded feet often indicate that a piece is in the Queen Anne style.
The English imported black walnut wood from the United States, where it was plentiful. Black walnut has a deep, rich color with dark streaks and is very durable. It is easy to carve and responds well to finishing and staining. It was a popular choice in late 19th century British furniture.
