Antique English Rosewood William IV Server, Circa 1830-1840
Height: 58 inches Width: 72 inches Depth: 18 inches
William IV ( 1830-1837) had a short reign as King of England, succeeding his brother George IV. Furniture of this period had a refined and restrained feeling, mostly borrowing from the Chippendale style.
Servers are usually smaller than sideboards and buffets. They were used for serving food and drinks during meals.
Rosewood resembles mahogany but it is a fine tropical wood that varies in color, with a unique black grain. Its rich hues made it popular in antique English furniture. Rosewood was sourced in Brazil and India. When rosewood was cut, it gave off a scent resembling roses, hence the name. It is a highly regulated wood in today’s world due to overharvesting and illegal logging.
