This box might have been used for sewing necessaries or for jewelry.

Antique sewing boxes were used for sewing notions ( needles, scissors, thread, buttons, thimbles, pins, and good shears)  to mend or make clothing.  The making or mending of garments were essential daily tasks in the 18th-20th centuries.

19th-century women had jewelry boxes for practical protection, sentimental storage, and as status symbols. The Victorian era made them popular as industrialization made jewelry more accessible. These beautifully crafted containers for heirlooms, tokens of love, and everyday trinkets, often featuring velvet linings and intricate designs like musical mechanisms, remain popular collector’s items.
