This lovely decorative tole box would have held coal for heating the house.  Tole is painted, enameled or lacquered tinplate. Tinplate is a thin sheet of steel coated with tin to keep the steel from rusting. The tin coating also provides a metallic luster. Tole pieces often bear decorative designs.
