Height: 15 inches   Width: 18 inches   Depth: 4 1/4 inches

In the 17th century, exotic sea shells brought to Europe by the Dutch East India Company started a collecting craze in the upper classes as they desired prized rare shells.  These finds were displayed in special cabinets to showcase their collections.  By the Victorian age,  creating special shell creations had become a pastime of the leisure classes.  This shadow box was most probably made by a lady of the times.
