Trumeau mirrors became popular during the Louis XV and Louis XVI period (1715-1789).   A trumeau is a wall mirror whose long, rectangular framed form contains a mirror in the bottom section and a painting or carved panel in the upper section (there are some cases where the location of the mirror is reversed).  Trumeaus were placed between windows or above fireplaces to reflect more light into a room.  Due to the painting or carving, trumeaus added a special decorative element to the spaces where they were placed.
