Antique French 19th Century Carved Walnut Panetière
Height: 34 1/2 inches Width: 42 inches Depth: 18 inches
Originating in the Provence region of France, panetières were carved wood cupboards for storing bread. They had openings in the sides and sometimes the floors to allow air to circulate and keep the bread fresh. Panetières were hung from the walls to keep the bread safe from rodents and pests. They are found in very simple, plain styles and also highly decorated forms.
