Tole is painted, enameled or lacquered tinplate. Tinplate is a thin sheet of steel coated with tin to keep the steel from rusting. The tin coating also provides a metallic luster.
Saxe flowers on antique porcelain are so named because they were first produced by the "Royal-Polish and Electoral-Saxon Porcelain Manufactory" in Meissen, Germany, around 1730. The flowers were made of hard-paste porcelain and were called "façon de Saxe" in French, meaning "in the manner of Saxony,". This term eventually became "Saxe flowers" in English. The porcelain flowers were used to decorate various objects, both functional and decorative. The manufactory in Meissen was known for its high-quality porcelain and its expertise in producing intricate floral designs.
