The Francois 1er (Francois the 1st) style of furniture was popular during the reign of King Francois I (1515-1547).  A huge patron of the arts, the king brought artists and craftsmen from Italy to France. The resulting style in this period of French Renaissance furniture inspired intricate woodcarving in oak and later walnut, attention to detail, naturalistic imagery and geometric patterns. Urns, garlands and friezes were additional decorative elements.
