Antique French Kingwood Armoire with Sèvres Plaques, Circa 1880

Height: 88 inches   Width: 41 inches   Depth: 16 inches

An armoire is a large, freestanding storage cupboard or cabinet with one or two doors.  They were often used to store clothing, although many were modified for other purposes. Armoires have their origins in late 16th century France.

Kingwood is a dense, exotic type of rosewood that can be sourced from a very small region of Brazil.  It is known for its striking violet-brown color and grain and is very expensive.

Sèvres plaques (flat, painted porcelain plates) were first produced by the Sèvres Manufactory in France in the late 1750s.  They were originally intended to decorate furniture as shown on this armoire.
