Antique French Liégeois Fruitwood Buffet à Deux Corps, Circa 1890
Height: 101 inches Width: 61 1/4 inches Depth: 21 3/4 inches
A "buffet à deux corps" is the name given to an antique two-tiered French cabinet, typically used for storage and display. The name translates to "buffet with two bodies". The upper section is shallower and often features glass doors for displaying china or decorative pieces, while the lower section is wider and deeper for more substantial storage.
The traditional Liège region of France, which today includes parts of Belgium, was known for its focus on solid wood furniture carving, often ornate and detailed (Baroque/Rococo scrolls, etc). Liège furniture, while sharing some similarities with French Provincial styles, is considered more refined and less rustic.
Fruitwood comes from fruit-bearing trees such as apple, cherry and pear. It was abundant and far less expensive than other woods, and it became a favorite in the making of provincial furniture. Fruitwood is moderately hard, with a fine grain and warm coloring. Moreover, fruitwood was easy to carve for the craftsmen executing provincial furniture.
