Antique French Lyonnaise Carved Oak Armoire, Circa 1790-1810
Height: 83 inches Width: 58 inches Depth: 24 inches
An armoire is a large, freestanding storage cupboard or cabinet with one or two doors. They were often used to store clothing, although many were modified for other purposes. Armoires have their origins in late 16th century France.
The Lyonnaise style is a distinctive French provincial style from the Lyon area, developed in large measure due to the demands of the wealny merchant class wanting furniture of their own character, setting it apart from the Parisian court styles. Lyonnaise furniture features robust lines and elaborate deep carving. The lines of the courtly furniture remain in part, but are embellished by the master carving.
