Antique French Napoleon III Era Vieux Paris Porcelain Veilleuse, Circa 1860-1870

Height: 10 inches   Width: 6 1/4 inches   Depth: 5 inches

Veilleuse means "night light" in French and these antique mug stands were kept at bedside for light and hot tea at night.  A candle or oil source would be put in the base to keep the light burning and the tea warm.

The reign of Napoleon III (1852-1870) is often referred to as the Second Empire style, characterized by an eclectic mixture of Neoclassic and contemporary elements. The style is considered very luxurious and opulent. “More is more” would be a phrase used to encapsulate Napoleon III designs.
