Antique French Onyx & Cloisonné Benetier, Circa 1920s

A benetier is a holy water stoup or font into which worshippers dip their fingers before crossing themselves when entering a church.    Benetiers could also be found in private homes of the very religious.

 

Cloisonné is an ancient art technique that originated in Persia for decorating metal objects with colorful enamel. Designs are outlined in metal wire, and then filled with enamal paste.

 

Onyx in France was sourced in the Upper Pyrenees.
