The French Provincial style emerged in the 1800s and is characterized by rustic design and subdued aesthetic compared to other French furniture styles.  It had its origins in the rural regions of France, where furniture was crafted using locally sourced materials and traditional techniques, rather than following the ornate styles set by the Parisian court. French Provincial pieces are solidly built and have stood up well against time.  Bordeaux, Normandy and Provence, among other provinces, were home to this furniture.

Solid woods such as oak, walnut, beech and fruitwood were used, often with a natural finish.  Cabinet hardware was of simple design, often iron or brass.  French Provincial furniture is warm and welcoming, with an emphasis on functionality.
