Antique Italian Capo di Monte Porcelain Lamp, Circa 1890
Height: 30 inches Diameter: 14 inches
Capo di Monte, or Capodimonte, was a soft paste porcelain developed in 18th century Italy under the patronage of the King of Naples between 1743 and 1759. It is known for intricate, elaborate decoration and moulded figurines. The reputation of the factory's products was so high that the name is often claimed and used for porcelain made in other factories in or around Naples. Aditionally, for a short period of time, the factory moved to Spain and then returned to Naples.
The words Capo di Monte translate to top of the mountain in English, and the location in Naples is a large hill, overlooking and protecting the city. It is now a cultural attraction for the city, with the beautiful Royal Palace of Capodimonte attracting many visitors with its fine art collection.
