Old Louisiana furniture was produced in the state of Louisiana during the 18th and 19th centuries.  It blended elements of European and African design, and used native woods such as cypress, pecan and pine, known for their durability and resistance to rot and insects.  Mahogany was also used when it was available. Two well-known styles of Old Louisiana furniture are “Louisiana Plantation” style (simple and elegant) and Louisiana Creole (ornate and decorative). Pieces are collected today for historical significance, craftsmanship and design.
