Antique Satinwood Secretary Bookcase, Circa 1880

Height: 92 inches   Width: 36 3/4 inches

A secretary bookcase is a combination of a writing desk with storage above for books or display items (often behind glass doors) and storage drawers beneath.  They were practical pieces of furniture combining beauty and functionality.  The writing desk would drop down to use and often contain small compartments for stationery, ink, pens and blotters.  They could be closed up and locked for privacy of content when not in use.

Satinwood is a tropical hardwood with a glossy finish and was very expensive in its day.  It is native to India, Sri Lanka and parts of the Caribbean.  It is valued for its use in fine cabinetwork and decorative veneers
