Alexandre Nestor Nicholas Robert, Belgian School (1817-1890

 

Robert was born in Trazengies en Hainaut, Belgium in February 1817.  While he painted landscapes, he was best known for his portraits, often of the upper classes or nobility. This beautiful portrait of an elegant lady with fine detail is typical of his work.  Robert depicts the graceful surroundings with the flowers and books on the marble table, her magnificent black dress with lace, contrasting the lady’s exquisite porcelain skin.

 

Robert  exhibited at the Paris Salon and won a medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1855.  His works can be found in many European museums.
