Dutch marquetry is a decorative art form dating to the 17th century. Craftsmen in the Netherlands used veneers (thin strips or pieces of word) to create intricate designs on furniture or objects. Woods such as ebony, oak, rosewood and walnut were used. The process involves drawing or applying a pattern onto the base wood, then cutting out the veneer pieces according to the pattern. These pieces are then carefully fitted and glued into place to create the final design. Dutch marquetry's intricate and detailed patterns often incorporated floral motifs, geometric shapes, and scrollwork.
The Queen Anne style emerged in early 18th century England, and is characterized by graceful curves, flowing lines and simple decorations. The style was focused on comfort and elegance. Cabriole legs and padded feet often indicate that a piece is in the Queen Anne style.
