Pair Antique English Oak Barley Twist and Brass Candlesticks, Circa 1890

Height: 14 inches   Diameter: 6 inches

Barley twist furniture and accessories feature hand-turned spiraled corkscrew-like designs usually made of hardwoods such as oak and walnut.  The style emerged in the 17th century influenced by the Jacobean period and remained popular thereafter, particularly in the Victorian and Edwardian eras (1880s - early 1900s), due to advancement in woodworking machinery.  Barley twists were twisted sugar candies that children would enjoy at festivals and fêtes and the name carried over into this furnishing style.
