Nature morte is the French term for what we call still life.  Still life presents inanimate objects from daily life in a realistic, composed setting, or simply as anatomically correct studies.  The term literally means "dead nature," highlighting the focus on objects that are not living, such as dead or decaying animals, fruit and flowers. The French produced them in wood carvings and paintings.
