Tole is painted, enameled or lacquered tinplate. Tinplate is a thin sheet of steel coated with tin to keep the steel from rusting.  The tin coating also provides a metallic luster.  Tole pieces often bear decorative designs.  The decorative porcelain flowers on these sconces add a lovely touch.
