Faience is a type of French earthenware decorated with opaque colored glazes.  It is a very old ceramic technique.  The invention of a white pottery glaze suitable for painted decoration was a huge advance in the development of ceramics.  These plates are also decorated with ormolu (gold bronze) and a bronze figure in the center.
