Pair Antique French Ormolu, Grey Marble & Cloisonné Enamel Candelabra

Circa 1885-1895

Height: 23 inches  Width: 11 1/2  inches  Depth: 9 1/2 inches

These handsome candelabra have several decorative elements.  The grey marble is naturally elegant, and adds a luxurious dimension to the design.  Bronze d'oré, also known as ormolu or gilt bronze, was a decorative finish used on luxury furnishings in the 18th and 19th centuries. An application of finely ground high carat gold and mercury amalgam was placed on objects of bronze. When subjected to extremely high heat, the mercury evaporated, leaving behind a lustrous coating of gold, as can be readily seen on these pieces.    Cloisonné is an ancient decorative technique used to create intricate designs on metal objects using colorful glass enamels and thin metal wires. The wires, or "cloisons" (French for partitions), are soldered to the metal base and then filled with enamel paste, creating separate compartments for each color. The piece is then fired to melt the enamel and create a glossy, glass-like surface.  The combination of all the decorative elements result in a lovely pair of candelabra.
