Kutani is a type of Japanese porcelain that was produced in the town of Kutani, Ishikawa prefecture, during the Edo period (1603-1868).  It is characterized by rich and vibrant colors, often featuring deep green, blue, red, purple and yellow.  Kutani porcelain was considered a luxury item. It was often decorated with overglaze enamels to create a hard, glossy covering.
