Pair Antique Late 19th Century Bronze Castings of The Horses of Marly

Late 19th Century

Height: 22 inches   Width: 8 inches

The original Horses of Marly are a pair of monumental  Carrara marble sculptures by Guillaume Coustou, created between 1743 and 1745, and commissioned by King Louis XV of France.  The sculptures depict two rearing horses being restrained by grooms.  They were originally placed at the entrance of the horse pond (abreuvoir) at the Château de Marly, but were moved to the Place de la Concorde in Paris in 1794.

The Marly Horses are considered masterpieces of French sculpture and have been widely reproduced in various sizes and materials, including bronze. They also influenced later artists, particularly those interested in equestrian subjects.

The original marble sculptures are now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris.
