Rare Antique 18th Century Peat Bucket
Height: 13 inches Diameter: 11 1/2 inches
A peat bucket was a container, often made of wood and brass, used to hold and transport peat, a type of fuel, in regions where it was readily available, like Ireland. They were commonly found near fireplaces in homes and were designed to be both functional and decorative. Some peat buckets also had a practical purpose, such as keeping plates warm near the fire or serving as a chamber pot.
Peat is a natural, organic soil material formed from the partially decomposed remains of plants, primarily mosses, in waterlogged, oxygen-poor environments like bogs and marshes. It's characterized by its spongy texture, high water retention, and acidic nature. Peat is commercially significant as a fuel source and a soil amendment, but its extraction has environmental consequences.
