British officers of social position in the Georgian and Victorian eras (1714 - 1901) often had portable furniture that accompanied them on military campaigns.  One of the most forms of furniture was the military or campaign chest (essentially a chest of drawers).  These were made in two pieces so they could be easily moved from place to place. In this case, there was also a writing desk included in the top portion.
