Set of 12 1950s Heavy Silver Goblets

Height: 5 1/4 inches

These goblets were made in Mexico for Sanborn's in Mexico City. Sanborn's was founded as a soda shop in 1903 by California brothers Walter and Frank Sanborn looking for a better life in Mexico.  Their business thrived and grew and by the 1920s, was handling the sale of fine antiques and silver items.

Sanborn's  commissioned skilled Mexican silversmiths to create pieces according to their designs, particularly during the 1920s and onwards. This practice was influenced by the growing artisan movement and the rise of Mexican silverwork. Sanborn's producted silver items in an European manner with contemporary looks for their department store,  Sanborn, U.S. immigrants seeking a better life in Mexico.  They started off as a soda fountain and lunch counter business and gradually became one of the key places to source antiques and silver in Mexico City,  particularly in the aftermath of World War II when Europe was in disarray.
