Antique English Burled Walnut Canterbury, Circa 1850-1860

Height: 36 inches   Width:  27 1/4 inches   Depth: 17 5/8 inches

A canterbury is an English stand with compartments to hold papers, newspapers, books or sheet music. The name derives from the Archbishop of Canterbury, in the late 18th century, who is believed to have been the first to commission such a piece.  Canterburies can be low or high, open topped or closed depending upon their age.  They are useful pieces of furniture for the home.

Burl walnut (American English) or Burr walnut (British English) is wood harvested from the base of walnut trees, where a large ball often occurs. The burl itself is actually an abnormal growth or deformity on the tree, often caused by some sort of stress such as a virus or bug infestation. When cut, the burl has a distinct appearance that can be finished to create an attractive piece of furniture or other structure. Walnut burl wood exhibits a rich dark color with deep, complex grain patterns, and is often used in crafting high-end furniture, veneers, and decorative items.
