During the Victorian and Edwardian periods in England, bookstands became popular items in living spaces.  They allowed the leisurely enjoyment of books without the formality of a library setting.  Bookstands that revolved so that the reader could choose a book from among many were also popular.  The bookstands were made of varied materials and could be of simple or elaborate design.
